Annual road rally will highlight advances in fuel-cell technology
SACRAMENTO: Today the California Air Resources Board announced
the 2009 Hydrogen Road Tour, an annual road rally to demonstrate
the advancements in fuel-cell technology, will begin May 26 in
San Diego, and end June 3 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Organized by the ARB, California Fuel Cell Partnership, National
Hydrogen Association and US Fuel Cell Council, the tour will
travel more than 1,700 miles and have 28 stops. The public will
be invited to test drive the vehicles and experience first hand
their range, performance and road readiness.
"Fuel cell technology is on the verge of becoming a practical
alternative to burning gasoline," said Air Resources Board
Chairman Mary D. Nichols. "This year's road tour demonstrates how
far the industry has come and how near we are to putting these
cars in the public's hands."
Currently, 300 fuel-cell vehicles have been placed on California
roads and manufacturers expect to increase that to 4,300 by 2014.
Fuel cell technology is also being used to power transit buses
and forklifts, and to produce electricity for industrial uses.
Examples of these will be showcased at some of the tour's stops.
California is a proponent of diversifying the fuels used to
power transportation. As part of ARB's 2006-2007 budget, the
California legislature allotted $25 million for the purposes of
encouraging the use of biofuels and high efficiency, low-emitting
vehicle technologies. These funds were used to support projects
that reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by using
alternative fuels.
In April 2009, ARB adopted a low carbon fuel standard fulfilling
Governor Schwarzenegger's 2007 executive order. The regulation is
aimed at driving down greenhouse gas emissions from the
transportation sector, which accounts for 40 percent of the
state's total emissions of climate changing gases. To achieve
this goal 20 percent of petroleum used in California cars will be
replaced with clean alternatives, including electricity,
biofuels, hydrogen and other options by 2020.
Recently, the Air Resources Board awarded Mebtahi Station
Services, San Francisco Airport, Shell Hydrogen and UCLA $1.7
million each to supplement the construction of hydrogen refueling
stations. When these stations are constructed the amount of
hydrogen available to the public will be double.
"I'd like to congratulate the partnership, the individual auto
manufacturers working to develop these cars and the companies
installing needed refueling stations," Nichols added. "Their
great progress secures our energy independence and defends the
environment."
The Air Resources Board is a department of the California
Environmental Protection Agency. ARB's mission is to promote and
protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through
effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and
considering effects on the economy. The ARB oversees all air
pollution control efforts in California to attain and maintain
health based air quality standards

"There is energy in water. Chemically, it’s locked up in the atomic bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. When the hydrogen and oxygen combine, whether it’s in a fuel cell, internal combustion engine running on hydrogen, or a jury-rigged pickup truck with an electrolysis cell in the bed, there’s energy left over in the form of heat or electrons. That’s converted to mechanical energy by the pistons and crankshaft or electrical motors to move the vehicle.
Problem: It takes exactly the same amount of energy to pry those hydrogen and oxygen atoms apart inside the electrolysis cell as you get back when they recombine inside the fuel cell. The laws of thermodynamics haven’t changed, in spite of any hype you read on some blog or news aggregator. Subtract the losses to heat in the engine and alternator and electrolysis cell, and you’re losing energy, not gaining it—period. "
There are laws that everything in nature must follow. Things like gravity, and there is no free ride.
"HHO enthusiasts—from hypermilers to Average Joes desperate to save at the pump—suggest that hydrogen changes the way gasoline burns in the combustion chamber, making it burn more efficiently or faster. Okay, there have been a couple of engineering papers that suggest a trace of hydrogen can change the combustion characteristics of ultra-lean-burning stratified-charge engines. Properly managed H2 enrichment seems to increase the burn rate of the hydrocarbons in the cylinder, extracting more energy. However, these studies only suggest increases in fuel economy by a few percentage points and don’t apply unless the engine is running far too lean for decent emissions. That’s a long way from the outrageous claims of as much as 300-percent improvements in economy that I see on the Internet and in my mailbox.
There’s no reason to believe that even more modest increases claimed by some of the ads could be achieved by a conventional, computer-controlled automobile engine running under closed-loop driving—that is, the computer’s ability to sample the oxygen output of the engine’s exhaust in real time and slew the fuel/air ratio for big mpg and small emissions. The combustion chamber events are far different in the type of ultra-lean-burn engines where hydrogen enrichment has been seen to help. Ultra-lean means there’s a lot of extra oxygen around for the hydrogen to have something to react with—far more than the very modest amount we’re sucking in from the typical homebrew hydrogen generator made from a Mason jar. "
People are selling the hydrogen generators for $995 , $695 , $495 on Ebay. Its crazy that people are buying them, but they are.
I can't wait to see the results from Popular Mechanics on the testing they are doing with the HHO generator. They will help to debunk the Water for Gas myth.

Hydrogen from Water Boosts Mileage
Jerry Dossey is a curious, creative man who has been around automobiles most of his life. Originally from Prince Georges County, Md., he worked his way to Florida and back again as a car salesman. Some five years ago he went to work at Chrysler of Culpeper as sales manager.
He has created a small unit that plugs into the engine's air intake. It sends hydrogen into the fuel mix where it powers the engine. The engine's sensors think the extra hydrogen means too much fuel is being used, and reduces the amount.
“When you improve the hydrogen inside the engine itself, it will burn off the carbon that has built up,” Dossey said. “Once the carbon is off, you're going to get better mileage automatically.
“So you're burning less fuel because of the hydrogen and you've burned off the carbon, which will give you more horsepower, better emissions, and better miles per gallon.”
As always, however, the proof is in the pudding.
Once his prototype was finished, Dossey was ready for a test.
He drove his Jeep south on U.S. 29, turned around and came back. He was getting 14 miles per gallon. He refilled his tank at the same gas station, and duplicated the trip.
“I did everything I could to make sure everything was the same,” he said. “The Jeep went from 14 miles per gallon to 20-some miles per gallon.”
Scientific again. 20 something miles to a gallon. All from a sales manager from a Chrysler Dealership. Not scientists, a used car salesman.

After I installed the HHO unit this vehicle went up to 546 miles per tank with regular 87 gas, I have and increase of 226 miles more per tank approximate 7.0 more miles per gal. plus I saved .20 cents extra between gas grades. thats around 70% of savings. So, if you have a bigger engine, could be a little less, but if you have a smaller engine, you can save even more.
