Popular Mechanics Tests Fuel Savers

Popular Mechanics

"As long as there have been cars, there have been gadgets that promise revolutionary improvements in performance and mileage. And every time there's a spike in fuel prices, these gadgets proliferate like mushrooms after a spring rain. Like now, with crude oil over $60 per barrel. Scan the Internet, store shelves and, yes, even the classified ads in the back of PM, and you will find dozens of devices promising to boost power, reduce emissions and, of course, improve mileage by 20, 40, even 300 percent!"

"We purchased seven typical gadgets--ranging in price from $20 to nearly $400--representing the most common approaches used by devices claiming to boost mileage, such as applying magnets to the fuel line, modifying air intakes or injecting extra fuel into the engine.

We conducted our tests at the Universal Technical Institute, a large training facility for automotive technicians, in Houston"

"We strapped the trucks down to a pair of chassis dynamometers and ran them dry of gasoline. Then we added a measured quantity of gas, and ran four dyno pulls to determine horsepower and torque. Next, we accelerated to a corrected 70 mph, set the cruise control to keep the speeds consistent and ran the trucks dry again. This gave us a base line of each truck's unmodified power and fuel consumption."

1.MIRACLE MAGNETS

THE DYNO SAYS: As we suspected, neither device had any significant effect on performance or economy.

2.VORTEX GENERATORS

THE DYNO SAYS: Both devices reduced peak horsepower by more than 10 percent. The Intake Twister increased fuel consumption by about 20 percent; the TornadoFuelSaver provided no significant change.

3.ENGINE IONIZER

THE DYNO SAYS: The truck we tested showed about a 15-hp loss with the Ionizer. About 10 miles into our economy test, the left bank of rubber capacitor blocks started to melt and sag onto the red-hot exhaust manifold. When smoke started to fill the dyno room, we interrupted the test and redressed the wires and capacitor blocks more securely. But when one on the right bank liquefied and dripped onto the manifold, we had flames a good 2 ft. tall, requiring the use of a 20-pound fire extinguisher. This, of course, terminated the test. Besides, most of the capacitor blocks looked like yesterday's chewing gum. Consequently, we have no comment as to the abilities of the Electronic Engine Ionizer Fuel Saver to reduce fuel consumption

4.VAPOR INJECTORS

THE DYNO SAYS: Theory predicted that there would be no change in power, because at high throttle settings the lowered intake manifold vacuum would simply not pull much--if any--fuel through the device. As expected, horsepower was not significantly changed; fuel economy was unchanged.

5.WATER INJECTION

THE DYNO SAYS: With the AquaTune adjusted according to the instructions, the test truck gave us 20 fewer horsepower and about a 20 percent poorer fuel economy.

The bottom line now three years later. Fuel has more than doubled since this test. A lot more people looking to save money on gas. Looking for the miracle product. As this test shows, there are no miracle products. No conspiracies.

Buy This Product - Up To 150 hp and 50 MPG

Buy it now for $23.95 $4.95 for shipping. What do you suppose you get for $23.95. Some amazing device that will give you UP TO 150 hp. UP TO 50 MPG.

Install it in 5 -10 minutes. Two wire hook up. Ever hear of snake oil ?

They think they are covering themselves by saying UP TO. UP TO could be nothing. I will tell you, if there were some two wire module, that you could add to a car, and make it double in horsepower, and double the mileage , then this would have been installed at the factory.

All bullshit. Nothing else. I think they are going for the fact that most people are lazy, and no very little about cars. They get the placebo effect. Install this and then "think" or "feel" you are getting better mileage. Maybe now you will be paying more attention to whats going on.

You can make 150 hp gains out of some cars with a tune/ECU/chip. First off this two wire snake oil module is not one of them, and they are not even selling them for the kinds of vehicles that will get 150 hp gains - Diesel trucks. Diesel trucks, by increasing the boost, and adding fuel, they make a ton more power. A diesel doesn't detonate like a gasoline engine car, so they can make a lot more power. However, with more power comes more cylinder pressure. Some engines are borderline already, and increasing boost, and fuel will void warranties, and potentially hurt the engine.

Now, back to the car this is sold for : Nissan 200SX. The SE-R version of the 200SX sold in the US made 140 horsepower stock. UP TO 150 more HP. Maybe 0 more hp. Maybe UP TO 150 hp.

Its a little sickening how many people will get taken by things like this. This guy looks like he sold 45 of these the last month. 2 negative feedbacks.

Why no email? Incorrect Install. We will contact u 2 help u through the install.

Nice a loss of 7 mpg. Of course it was incorrectly installed. The two wires went in the wrong place. They were supposed to join the two wires in the engine control module (computer) that make the car double in horsepower and mpg.

Negative feedback rating150 HP & 50 MPG is not trueJul-25-08 21:23

  • Reply by rapidvelocityco (Jul-25-08 22:17):
Auction clearly states, "up to 150 HP and 50 mpg" If not happy, 100% money back

Of course its not going to make 150 more horsepower, nor is it going to make a car get 50 mpg. Its that UP TO thing again.

Perhaps I am just being a hater.Perhaps I know nothing about cars, and tuning. Perhaps I know nothing about ECU's, sensors, and inputs. Or perhaps I do.

So far this guy has made about $800 in just the last 18 days or so off eBay suckers. Don't be a sucker. Get educated. Understand how an engine works.

201 Tips For Saving Gas - Better MPG

GasSavers.org

11. Fouled gas injectors
Ask a mechanic to look for fouled gas injectors. Change them as necessary.

Its difficult to "look" for fouled injectors. A lot of places will "sell" you a cleaning. However injectors need to be reverse flowed to actually be cleaned. Its not possible to clean them in place. If your car is running normally, the car doesn't have a miss,no check engine lights, its probably not the fuel injectors.

14. Check your fuel ratio
An incorrect fuel ratio can have a big effect on gas mileage.

Its difficult for most consumers to check their own fuel ratio. If you have a wideband oxygen sensor, its possible. Most new cars use a factory wideband oxygen sensor to keep the fuel trims within parameters. If the car throws a check engine/service engine soon light, get it checked out.

32. Key off, then Park - automatic transmission only
You will save a small of gas by slightly changing your shutdown procedure. When you park turn off the ignition before shifting into Park and setting the parking brake.

Never heard of that one

34. Avoid drive-thrus
Where possible avoid drive thru windows, they lead to excessive idling and don't forget always switch off your engine if you are expecting to stop for more than a few seconds.

This is a good one. I hate drive though. The ultimate in lazy. And always remember, "you get screwed in the drive though."

60. Listen to calm music
Slower paced music is more relaxing and tends to promote a more sensible driving style while reducing stress.

Maybe whale sounds.

85. Slowing down for gas economy
An excellent gas efficient way to slow down is to coast in neutral with the engine idling.

Its not actually. Many cars have deceleration fuel cutoff. If your foot is off the throttle, and the car is decelerating, the fuel injectors are turned off.

88. Change your oil
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you can improve your gas mileage by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil.
Motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve gas economy.
Check and replace air filters regularly. Would you believe that replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to 10%?

Just good overall advice. Change your oil. Its the blood of your engine.

101. Avoid towing if possible
Trailer towing that your vehicle has three extra challenges to reduce gas efficiency: (i) Increased weight, (ii) Higher aerodynamic drag, (ii) More tires on the unit you are towing producing greater rolling resistance.

I always try to "avoid towing". However sometimes you can not avoid it.

116. Gas Additives
Remember that all or most of the gasoline additives that work have pretty much always been offered - right at the gas pump. And if someone is interested in finding ways to increase their gas mileage through additives.
If there is a miracle gas additive out there then you and everyone else will get to hear about it, but currently the media explosion hasn't happened so please be circumspect and save your money for gas, it costs enough already, don't make it more expensive pouring dubious chemicals into your tank, that may actually harm your engine!

Snake oil

126. Ice vest
An ice vest is another option to using A/C.

Ah, yeah...

130. Slowing down for to achieve gas economy
A good gas efficient way to slow down is to coast in neutral with engine switched off and roll gently to a halt.

Dangerous, but you save gas. Perhaps no power brakes. Perhaps no power steering. If you do it wrong, you lock the steering wheel.

156. Don't switch off your engine
Switching your engine off for short periods of time can actually increase fuel consumption, as it requires more fuel to get the engine started and your catalytic converter will no longer be running at full temperature and so your car will be less efficient, increasing the amount of pollution you cause.

First they say to turn off the engine. Then they say to leave it on.Someone is confused ? How many people did they let write this ?

196. THE MAGNETIC FUEL SAVER
There are loads of adverts on the internet at the moment all full of loads nonsense avoid these products and as a rule of thumb ANY THING USING CAPITALS TO ADVERTS ITS WORTH it won't work and isn't worth the cash you would waste on it.

Magnets don't save fuel ? I wonder why Porsche doesn't use them on their gas guzzlers ? Or Ferrari, or Lamborghini. Its a conspiracy. Please take off your aluminum foil hat if you believe in that conspiracy theory.

There are about 10 "tips" that say don't exceed the speed limit. A bit of conflicting information there.
